DIWALI is about to bang our doors to enthrall us again. The razzmatazz of the colorful and awe-inspiring fireworks cracking, the Rangolis, the Diyas is indeed a sight to behold.
However, Diwali & pollution comes hand in hand. Excess smoke released from the crackers/fireworks on Diwali may lead to troublesome. Though crackers have been banned in many parts of the country, yet there are few people who are still practicing the same.
The most sensitive part of our body is our eyes. Air pollution affects our whole body but eyes are the highly exposed part. After hands, eyes are the most affected area during Diwali time which makes it even more important to take care of this precious organ.
According to statistics, almost 60% of injuries happen because of the Diwali fireworks to the children and the bystanders. Many people can get incurable eye infections, the repercussions of cracker burning at the time of Diwali can be so serious sometimes that some people end-up getting either partial/permanent loss of vision. - Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities, especially with sparklers.
- Burst crackers in an open space and make sure to protect your eyes.
- Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks.
- Move back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
- Try to keep fireworks away from clothes, hair and especially face(eyes).
- Keep up immediate measures like a bucket full of water nearby in case of accidental emergency.
- Wash Your Hands thoroughly after burning crackers.
- Don’t Rub Your Eyes; Due to the smoke or particles of the crackers, your eyes may feel itchy.
- Wear protective eyeglasses while bursting crackers.
- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Ensure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
As beautiful this festive looks, Diwali crackers and fireworks account for thousands of emergency room visits each year during this festival. Festival of lights can be beautiful, but if not done carefully, it can cause serious injuries.
As Diwali is about to knock on our doors, it’s essential to take safety measures as this festival of lights leaves behind a lot of eye injuries.
